So here's the story on the lack of Artist of the Month reports. When I moved to Daejeon, I had cable already connected but no MTV. Here it is over a month later and I have yet to see a bill. I'm anticipating it so I can then call the company and request a better channel package. Until then, I have to scour the Korean MTV website (in Korean, mind you!) for the top 10, most requested, etc.
So far, I haven't been able to find the Artist of the Month listed anywhere.
This video I bring you today is my favorite out of the top 10, it's currently number 4. The video features SoHee, a singer herself. She is one of a four-member-girls group and famous for her cutie face! 8Eight is a newer band, 2 guys and 1 girl, who released their first album in August 2007 after winning a Korean singing contest show (MBC's 쇼바이벌) similar to American Idol.

How I Spent my Seollal

After settling into our little shanty over the water, we had dinner, had beers on the porch and got ready for bed. Just as I was washing my face, I heard a little scratching and scurrying - then we both heard a louder scratching and scurrying - then we saw the scratcher and scurryer. A RAT!! He ran across the open rafters above our small room and we packed our bags!
We wanted to just transfer to a new place but the resort insisted on putting us in one of the on-land cabins since it was so late. The new room had a closed ceiling with no visible rafters so we agreed. The next morning we walked up the quiet jungle road in search of a better place. We saw older, shabbier shanties-on-the-water, places under construction due to lack of tenants, a huge hilltop mansion closed due to bankruptcy, and finally a lush, well-kept sea-side resort a step up on the room-rate scale. Upon finding this Eden-like property, we decided the money was worth having a clean and cool, rat-free room!
While time eased by, we spent the next few days eating our meals, drinking, reading, sunning, walking, budgeting, and eating again at the resort. There wasn't much of a beach since the tidal plain on the east coast of Bintan is shallow almost a kilometer from shore, but we made use of the resort's two swimming pools daily. I finished 2 books and Deuk regretted only buying one magazine. The sun was high and hot. The food was fresh and exotic.
When we had arrived at the Bintan Agro, we were nearly the only guests. Throughout our visit, though, people arrived by twos and fours to enjoy the quiet. At the peak of our stay, the Chinese New Year, we sat on the patio drinking a cold beer while the children lit fireworks.
To make the most of our time there, we booked a driver to go to the nearby village and floating market, scheduled spa services twice (oil massage and foot reflexology), and chartered a small boat for a snorkeling and swimming excursion (to a white island with an amazing coral reef teeming with life).
Just as the clouds rolled in 5 days after we arrived, we rolled out. Back to Singapore for the final 3 days.

How I Spent my Seollal

So, the morning after the zoo we decide it's finally time to leave Singapore for the beach. The word was that we needed to head down to the Golden Mile Complex to see a travel agent about a bus ticket. I had my heart set on Pulau Tioman, an island on the east coast of Malaysia, so we started to ask around about bus tickets to Mersing, the coastal town closest to the island. Unfortunately, the daily bus left early that morning. Also, the next few days' buses were unavailable. I still don't know if it's due to monsoon season (less buses going there) or Chinese New Year (over-booked), but it was probably both. We could have gone to Kuala Lumpur and hoped for a bus from there, but I didn't want to risk/waste precious beach time waiting around another city.
Exasperated after being turned away by at least 8 agents, I finally broke.
"Look, we just want to relax on a beach," I said to the next agent.
He responded with a post-it note naming one over-traveled beach in southern Malaysia, as well as two in Indonesia.
"Indonesia?? Isn't that far away?"
"An hour by ferry," he replied. "Go to the Tanah Merah ferry terminal to get tickets." He was the most helpful of the day.
After a bit of internet research, Bintan, Indonesia seemed the best choice for peace and quiet. And so we traded our Ringgits for Rupiahs and headed to the ferry terminal for the rockiest boat ride of both of our short lives.
We arrived in a seeming island paradise, one of us a little lighter, both of us sicker. But I knew from my research that the northern section of the island was fenced off, over-priced resorts ala Club Med. We promptly booked a taxi driver to take us to the east cost where there were more affordable bungalows and quiet low-season treats. We found exactly what we were seeking: an adorable, cheap room; gorgeous, clean, sand beaches; absolute solitude, save for the staff. We were, in fact, the only residents at our resort.

White
All the cars in Daejeon are white. Actually, the trees are white as well. Yes, that's right - it is snowing. In Daejeon. In March. I can't quite believe it myself. The temperature has been around 8-9 lately, so it was meant to rain today.
Oh, well. It still feels a bit warmer than it should for a snow day, and at least it's pretty.
